Oil Painting

This class is a great opportunity for students new to painting as well as experienced painters.  Roger will teach color mixing, color relationships, glazing, light, composition, and concept. Students can work from photos or favorite objects.

Plein Air Sketchbooking

Join pastel and watercolor teacher, Kathleen Newman, to explore exciting techniques using your sketchbook outdoors.  

Meet at the Old Town Art Center classroom to learn watercolor and gouache (opaque watercolor) techniques in your sketchbook and learn how to travel 

light for outdoor painting.  The next three sessions will be held outdoors at various locations in Chicago.  We will discuss simplifying the scene, recording the most important information, and how to utilize your sketchbook as a method of gathering material for paintings to be done later in the studio.  

Students will need to pack a small backpack with a 9 x 12 watermedia sketchbook, pencils, eraser, small watercolor palette, brushes and a travel stool.  On the first day, we will discuss various ways to keep your materials to a minimum and travel with ease!  

Supply list will be sent upon registration.

This is a painting class for students of all levels of experience using oil, acrylic, or pastel.  Learn basic to advanced techniques with a modern perspective.  Didier will guide students according to needs, addressing technique, composition, color, perspective, and other visual elements.  Students work from photographs, sketches, or from their own imagination.

Join our classically trained Frenchman, Didier Nolet, to paint en plein aire.  Learn basic to advanced landscape techniques with a modern perspective. 

Students will meet in front of the Lincoln Park Conservatory, 2391 Stockton Drive. Bring a lunch.

ONE DAY WORKSHOP: Interpreting the Figure in Watercolor

This will be a dynamic one-day watercolor workshop designed to expose the student to Tom’s simplified approach to painting the figure. Tom will demonstrate his painting process from the beginning drawing to the finished painting. Students can work from their own reference photographs or Tom’s. This workshop offers a wonderful opportunity to break free from any self-imposed barriers and to begin a new journey of exploring the figure in a joyful and creative way.
